New Look Dental April Newsletter
This month we have a list reasons why it’s important to get your teeth cleaned every six months! 1. To prevent gum disease Gum disease is caused by the natural bacteria, mucus, and other particles that form to create plaque. Plaque that can’t be removed by brushing and flossing hardens and forms “tartar”, which in turn can only be removed by a professional teeth cleaning. Gum disease can cause inflamed gums, bad breath, loose/sensitive teeth, painful chewing and receding gums. 2. To keep your teeth As gum disease progresses into gingivitis and then periodontitis, the gums pull away from the teeth and create pockets that can get infected. The body’s response to fighting that bacteria causes the bone to break down which can eventually lead to loss of teeth. 3. To help maintain good physical health Recent studies have linked heart attacks and stroke to gum disease. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to have coronary artery disease. Furthermore, another study found that the presence of gingivitis, missing teeth, and cavities were good predictors of heart disease. 4. To prevent oral cancer Oral cancer is highly treatable if diagnosed early. When you receive a professional teeth cleaning from your dentist or hygienist, they are not only cleaning your teeth but also checking for signs of oral cancer. 5. To detect dental problems early Everyone knows that teeth and mouth problems are awful to deal with. The best way to avoid root canals, abscessed teeth, tooth loss and gum disease (which can all be very painful), is to make sure your teeth are being cleaned routinely. Routine teeth cleanings can detect new cavities, broken fillings, and any other issue that will be painful down the road if left untreated. 6. To prevent bad breath Let’s face it, bad breath is not only embarrassing, but can also be a hindrance to your everyday life. Studies show that the majority of people with halitosis (or persistent bad breath), have a dental problem to blame. Regular teeth cleanings will leave your breath smelling fresh and clean! 7. To have a bright, white, beautiful smile Having a white smile is essential to feeling good about yourself. Your dentist can remove most unsightly stains such as tobacco, coffee and tea stains. Anything beyond normal teeth cleaning can be removed with a whitening treatment, which may be recommended by your dentist during a routine cleaning. 8. To create a treatment plan If there are any serious issues going on in your mouth such as advanced gum disease, your dentist will be able to come up with a plan for treatment. This treatment plan will lay out cost, procedures, and any other thing you may need in order to achieve a healthy, beautiful smile! |
